Lagos Businessman Receives Four-Year Sentence for Cannabis Export Attempt to UK

Nigerian Entrepreneur Jailed for Attempted Cannabis Smuggling to Britain: A Four-Year Verdict

A Lagos businessman, Olorunfunmi Olakunle, was sentenced to four years imprisonment by a Federal High Court in Lagos for attempting to export 1.8 kilograms of cannabis sativa.

The cannabis was concealed in boxing kits and intercepted at Murtala Muhammed International Airport during a cargo clearance operation.

Olakunle pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy and unlawful exportation under the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Act.

The court, while sentencing him, considered his guilty plea and lack of prior convictions.

However, the convict’s plea for leniency, citing deception by an accomplice abroad, did not prevent the imposition of the jail term.

The convict was also fined ₦200,000 for each count and required to perform 30 days of community service in addition to the monetary penalty.
