A Lagos-based businesswoman, Oluremi Phillips, has been sentenced to 17 years in prison for her involvement in a fraud case involving N57.6 million.
The judgment was delivered by Justice Mojisola Dada of the Ikeja Special Offences Court in Lagos.
Phillips was found guilty of defrauding a company, primarily by falsely representing investment opportunities and misappropriating funds.
During the trial, the prosecution presented compelling evidence against her, leading to her conviction on multiple counts of obtaining money under false pretenses.
Justice Dada, in her ruling, emphasized the need for deterrence in cases of financial crimes, particularly those that exploit trust in business relationships.
The court also directed Phillips to make restitution to the affected parties as part of her sentence.
This case highlights the judiciary’s increasing efforts to clamp down on white-collar crimes in Nigeria, particularly those that undermine investor confidence.
