Mojisola Meranda has resigned as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly and has been re-elected as the Deputy Speaker. This leadership change occurred during a plenary session on March 3, 2025, as part of a broader reshuffling within the Assembly.
Meranda, who represents Apapa Constituency I, assumed the role of Speaker following the removal of Mudashiru Obasa in January 2025. Her resignation was reportedly influenced by directives from the All Progressives Congress (APC) leadership, aiming to restore Obasa to the Speaker position and resolve ongoing conflicts within the Assembly.
Following her resignation, Meranda was immediately re-elected as Deputy Speaker, a position she held prior to her tenure as Speaker. This move is seen as a compromise to maintain stability within the legislative body.
In her speech before stepping down, Meranda expressed her commitment to the Assembly’s unity and progress, stating that her decision was in the best interest of the House.
The Assembly members lauded Meranda for her leadership and dedication during her brief tenure as Speaker, acknowledging her efforts in steering the House through challenging times.
The reinstatement of Obasa as Speaker and Meranda’s re-election as Deputy Speaker are expected to bring stability and continuity to the legislative proceedings in Lagos State.
