The Lagos State Government has initiated the trial of two doctors, Michael Atiba and Michael Ugbeye, in connection with the death of a patient, Ejiro Ugorobi, after a surgical procedure.
The doctors are facing charges of involuntary manslaughter at the Ikeja High Court, based on allegations of negligence during and after the surgery performed on October 21, 2023.
Ejiro had undergone the surgery to treat a torn ligament but developed complications afterward, including weakness, shortness of breath, and palpitations, which led to his death shortly after the procedure.
The court has granted both doctors bail, but the trial continues as the prosecution aims to hold them accountable for the alleged medical negligence that resulted in Ejiro’s death.
The case has been adjourned until November 2024 for further hearings.
