Lagos Officials Oppose Bill to Abolish 37 LCDAs

Council Chairpersons Fight Against LCDA Abolition in Lagos

Lagos council chairpersons are opposing a recent bill aimed at scrapping the 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in the state.

These LCDAs, which were created by former Governor Bola Tinubu in 2003 to bring governance closer to the grassroots, are not recognized by the Nigerian constitution.

The bill seeks to restructure local governance by replacing the LCDAs with administrative councils, sparking concerns from the chairpersons.

They argue that scrapping the LCDAs would negatively affect service delivery to local communities, as these areas are crucial for addressing the needs of Lagos’ growing population.

This move comes amid ongoing calls for constitutional recognition of the LCDAs to ensure they can operate as fully-fledged local governments.

Lagos leaders, including prominent figures like Pa Ayo Opadokun, are urging President Tinubu to champion the cause and push for legal recognition at the national level.
