Lancelot Imasuen’s Bold Call-Out: Where Are Nollywood’s Icons?

Why Lancelot Imasuen Thinks Omotola and Genevieve Have Abandoned Nollywood

Veteran Nollywood filmmaker Lancelot Imasuen has publicly criticized prominent actors such as Omotola Jalade Ekeinde, Genevieve Nnaji, Jim Iyke, and others for what he perceives as their neglect of the Nigerian film industry that propelled them to fame. In a 2018 interview, Imasuen expressed disappointment that these A-list stars have not actively contributed to the industry’s growth, despite benefiting significantly from it. He emphasized that many of these actors have not utilized their influence to attract governmental support or investment for Nollywood, and he urged them to collaborate in revitalizing the industry .

In response to such criticisms, Omotola Jalade Ekeinde explained her intermittent absences from Nollywood, attributing them to the need for personal well-being and creative rejuvenation. She stated that after working continuously since the age of 15, taking breaks allows her to relax, reflect, and recharge, which she believes is essential for maintaining her passion and delivering compelling performances .

Similarly, Genevieve Nnaji has maintained a low profile in the industry in recent years. In 2014, director Obi Emelonye suggested that both Genevieve and Omotola might be receiving fewer roles because their high status commands fees that the industry may find challenging to afford, leading to fewer opportunities for them .

Despite these periods of reduced visibility, both actresses have remained engaged with the industry. For instance, in 2024, Omotola, Genevieve, and other notable actresses reunited for a “Girls Cot” gathering, demonstrating their ongoing connection to Nollywood .

Lancelot Imasuen continues to be an active figure in Nollywood, recently working on a remake of his iconic film “Isakaba.” He has also highlighted the positive impact of streaming platforms like Netflix on the industry, noting that such platforms have enhanced production quality and provided global exposure for Nigerian films .

The discourse around the involvement of veteran actors in Nollywood’s development underscores the evolving dynamics of the industry and the varying perspectives on how best to support its growth.
