FCT Police’s Dramatic Rescue of 59 Trafficked Children in Kano

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has intercepted a white Peugeot 15-seater bus transporting 59 children, aged between 4 and 12, suspected to have been trafficked from Kano State.

The vehicle was stopped along the Abuja-Kano route on January 6, 2025, by a police team led by Deputy Superintendent of Police Sarki Umar. The driver, Ali Ibrahim, and his assistant, Alhassan Ibrahim, both residents of Kano State, were arrested at the scene.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the children, from various families in Kano State, were allegedly being transported to Nasarawa State under the pretext of receiving training. The individual purportedly responsible for organizing the transportation is identified as Idris Usman, a resident of Nasarawa State.

FCT Commissioner of Police, Tunji Disu, stated that the incident is being treated as a case of suspected child trafficking and abuse, given the lack of proper documentation or parental consent for the movement of the minors. The children are currently in protective custody, and the police are collaborating with the FCT Social Development Secretariat to ensure their safe reunification with their families.

The police have reiterated their commitment to safeguarding vulnerable groups, particularly children, from exploitation and abuse, in line with the Child’s Rights Act 2003. Parents and guardians are urged to remain vigilant and ensure the safety of their children.
