The Nigeria Police Force has arrested a 38-year-old man, Destiny Ekhorutomuen, in Uhunmwonde Local Government Area of Edo State for allegedly using social media to disseminate false and inciting information aimed at discrediting the police and provoking public unrest.
According to Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, Ekhorutomuen was apprehended on December 8, 2024, by the National Cyber Crime Centre.
He is accused of creating and operating multiple social media accounts to spread misleading content designed to erode public trust in the police.
The police have expressed serious concerns over the deliberate spread of falsehoods, describing such actions as threats to national stability, societal cohesion, and public trust.
They have reiterated their zero-tolerance policy towards activities that undermine the nation’s security or tarnish the reputation of government institutions.
In response to this incident, the Inspector-General of Police has ordered the National Cybercrime Centre to intensify monitoring of online platforms and clamp down on individuals or groups engaged in spreading fake news or inciting disorder.
The police have also warned that misuse of social media to propagate false information is a criminal offense punishable under Nigerian law.
