The Enugu State Police Command has confirmed the death of Nnaemeka Ugwu, a patent medicine dealer, at the Nsukka Area Command. Ugwu reportedly collapsed on February 7, 2025, while attempting to secure the release of his detained wife. He was promptly taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
In response to allegations circulating in a viral video that Ugwu was harassed, detained, and tortured to death by police personnel, the command’s spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe, refuted these claims. He stated that Ugwu was neither arrested nor subjected to any form of mistreatment. According to Ndukwe, Ugwu’s wife had been arrested in connection with an armed robbery investigation. When Ugwu visited the station to facilitate her release, he suddenly collapsed.
The command emphasized that the narrative of torture is misleading and urged the public to await the outcome of a comprehensive investigation into the incident.
