A Los Angeles County jury has awarded $50 million to Michael Garcia, a delivery driver who suffered severe burns when a Starbucks beverage spilled in his lap at a drive-through in February 2020.
The incident occurred as Garcia was handed a tray containing a venti-sized “Medicine Ball” tea, which overturned, causing third-degree burns to his genitals, groin, and inner thighs.
Despite undergoing multiple surgeries, including skin grafts, Garcia continues to experience pain and permanent disfigurement.
Garcia’s lawsuit alleged that Starbucks employees failed to securely place the hot beverage in the takeout tray, leading to the spill.
The jury found Starbucks fully liable for negligence. In response, Starbucks expressed sympathy for Garcia but plans to appeal the decision, stating disagreement with the verdict and the amount awarded.
