Lionel Messi, the Argentine forward for Inter Miami, has been fined by Major League Soccer (MLS) for grabbing the neck of New York City FC assistant coach Mehdi Ballouchy. The incident occurred after a 2-2 draw in Miami, where video footage captured Messi approaching Ballouchy and placing his hand on the back of the coach’s neck, causing visible discomfort. The MLS Disciplinary Committee announced the fine on Tuesday, citing a violation of the league’s policy against “hands to the face/head/neck of an opponent.”
In a related incident during the same match, Messi’s teammate Luis Suárez was also fined for pinching the neck of Norwegian defender Birk Risa at halftime. Both players received undisclosed fines for their actions.
Despite these disciplinary actions, Inter Miami secured a 3-1 victory over Sporting Kansas City in the CONCACAF Champions Cup, with Messi contributing a goal in the 19th minute.
