In a recent exchange, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum humorously responded to U.S. President-elect Donald Trump’s proposal to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America.”

During a press conference, Sheinbaum displayed a 17th-century map labeling North America as “América Mexicana” and quipped that perhaps the United States should adopt this name.

Sheinbaum’s remarks were a lighthearted retort to Trump’s suggestion, which he announced during a press event at Mar-a-Lago. Trump expressed his desire to rename the Gulf, stating, “It’s appropriate. And Mexico has to stop allowing millions of people to pour into our country.”

In addition to the renaming proposal, Trump hinted at other territorial ambitions, including annexing Greenland and the Panama Canal Zone, and making Canada the 51st state. These statements have elicited varied reactions from international leaders.

Canadian officials, for instance, have dismissed the idea, with Ontario Premier Doug Ford humorously suggesting that Canada could consider purchasing Alaska and Minnesota.

Sheinbaum’s response underscores the complex and often tense relationship between Mexico and the United States, particularly concerning issues of immigration and trade.
