Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has responded firmly to former President Donald Trump’s threats of imposing tariffs on Mexico in an attempt to curb migration.

She highlighted the mutual importance of cooperation between the U.S. and Mexico, emphasizing that economic strength in North America relies on their trade partnership.

She argued that migration and drug issues should be tackled through collaboration rather than punitive measures like tariffs, which could lead to severe economic consequences for both nations, particularly in industries such as automotive manufacturing.

Sheinbaum also pointed out that Mexico has taken steps to address the fentanyl crisis, working to curb the flow of synthetic drugs and firearms into the country.

However, she emphasized the need for international cooperation, particularly in halting the trafficking of chemical precursors from Asia.

While she remains open to dialogue, Sheinbaum made it clear that any tariff imposed by the U.S. would be met with retaliatory measures, reflecting the interconnected nature of their economies.
