Minister Advocates for 12-Year Basic Education Model

Proposal to Replace JSS and SSS with New Education System

The Nigerian Minister of Education has recently called for the scrapping of the Junior Secondary School (JSS) and Senior Secondary School (SSS) system, proposing the introduction of a 12-year basic education model instead. This new system would essentially combine the current JSS, SSS, and part of primary education into one continuous 12-year curriculum.

The proposed reform aims to streamline education, providing students with a more integrated and standardized approach to learning. By making education more continuous, the ministry believes this could enhance the quality of education, improve student outcomes, and better align Nigeria’s educational system with global standards.

While the proposal has been welcomed by some education reform advocates, it also faces resistance from various quarters. Critics argue that such a drastic shift could cause disruption to an already overstressed system. There are also concerns about the logistics and funding required to implement such a change across the country, particularly in remote or underfunded regions.
