President Bola Tinubu has mandated the reintroduction of history as a compulsory subject in Nigeria’s basic education curriculum, effective from 2025.

Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, announced this directive, emphasizing the importance of reconnecting Nigerian youth with their historical roots.

History was removed from the basic school curriculum in 2007, leading to concerns about a generational disconnect from Nigeria’s past.

In 2018, efforts were initiated to reintroduce the subject, including the training of 3,700 history teachers to enhance its teaching.

The reintroduction aims to address the erosion of civic values and national identity among young Nigerians.
