NCoS Refutes Claims of Illegal Detention of Ex-Aides

Patience Jonathan’s Ex-Aides: NCoS Denies Detention Claims

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) in Bayelsa State has refuted claims of the illegal detention of 15 former domestic staff of Dame Patience Jonathan, wife of former President Goodluck Jonathan. Reports circulating on social media alleged that these individuals have been held without trial since 2019 for allegedly stealing valuables belonging to the former First Lady. The NCoS has dismissed these allegations as unfounded, stating that such reports are intended to tarnish the service’s image.

In a statement issued by the Bayelsa State Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASC I G.T. Isari, the NCoS clarified that the individuals were lawfully remanded by the Bayelsa State High Court 1 and have been attending court proceedings as scheduled.

They were present in court on March 10 and 11, 2025, and most recently on April 3, 2025. The next hearing is set for April 17, 2025. The NCoS emphasized that no individual is admitted into custody without a valid court-issued remand warrant, underscoring that all 15 individuals are detained in accordance with legal procedures.

The service also addressed rumors of a secret meeting between Dame Patience Jonathan and correctional officials, labeling these reports as fabricated and intended to cause public unrest. They assured the public that the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Okaka remains one of the most peaceful facilities in the country.

The NCoS reaffirmed its commitment to the lawful detention, welfare, and reformation of inmates under the leadership of Acting Controller General Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche.
