NDLEA Arrests Traditional Worship Leader for Drug Trafficking in Lagos

Australia-Bound Cocaine Found in Face Cream Bottles: NDLEA’s Major Bust

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has recently intensified its operations against drug trafficking in Nigeria, leading to significant arrests and seizures.

Arrest of Traditional Worship Leader

In Lagos, NDLEA operatives apprehended Bariu Aliu, also known as ‘Malo’, the chief priest of the Igunuko shrine located at Alpha Beach, Ajah, Lekki. Aliu had been evading capture for over three months following the discovery of 2,760 kilograms of skunk at his shrine in October 2024. His arrest marks a significant breakthrough in the agency’s efforts to dismantle drug trafficking networks operating under the guise of traditional practices.

Interception of Australia-Bound Cocaine

In a separate operation, NDLEA officers in Lagos intercepted a shipment destined for Australia containing 20 wraps of cocaine, weighing 330 grams, concealed within face cream containers. This method of smuggling highlights the lengths traffickers go to evade detection. The agency’s vigilance in uncovering such sophisticated concealment methods underscores its commitment to combating international drug trafficking.

Seizure of Codeine-Based Syrup in Port Harcourt

Additionally, the NDLEA reported the seizure of 338,200 bottles of codeine-based syrup, valued at over ₦1.19 billion, from two containers at the Port Harcourt Ports Complex in Onne, Rivers State. The discovery was made during joint examinations conducted on January 9 and 10, 2025, in collaboration with Customs and other security agencies. This significant haul reflects the agency’s proactive measures in intercepting large consignments of illicit substances before they reach the consumer market.

NDLEA’s Ongoing Efforts

These operations are part of a broader strategy by the NDLEA to disrupt drug trafficking syndicates across Nigeria.

The agency’s Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), commended the officers involved and reiterated the NDLEA’s dedication to reducing both the supply and demand of illicit drugs in the country. The recent successes demonstrate the agency’s balanced approach to tackling drug-related issues, focusing on enforcement and preventive measures.
