On January 21, 2025, operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) intercepted a consignment of “Loud,” a potent synthetic strain of cannabis, concealed within a duvet at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Ikeja, Lagos. The package was destined for the United Kingdom. Following the discovery, two suspects, Adakole Sunday and Austin Balogun, were arrested in connection with the attempted export.
The seized consignment comprised six parcels of the psychoactive substance, weighing a total of 3.50 kilograms. Austin Balogun, identified as the primary agent, admitted to hiring Adakole Sunday for the operation. He disclosed that he received ₦700,000 for the task, allocating a portion to export handling charges and using the remainder to secure an apartment.
In a related operation, NDLEA operatives raided a hideout in the Igbo Olomu area of Ikorodu, Lagos, arresting two individuals: Joseph Oluwasegun Adewale and Biodun Adelakun. The raid led to the seizure of seven liters of “skuchies,” a new psychoactive substance made from black currant, cannabis, and opioids. Additionally, authorities recovered three locally made double-barrel rifles, one locally made double-barrel pistol, one English-made pistol, one locally made single-barrel rifle, three cartridges, one empty 9mm cartridge, and an iron-headed axe.
These operations underscore the NDLEA’s ongoing commitment to combating drug trafficking and the proliferation of illicit substances within and beyond Nigeria’s borders.
