Ahead of the Europa League quarter-final between Manchester United and Olympique Lyonnais, former United midfielder Nemanja Matic, now with Lyon, criticized United’s goalkeeper André Onana, calling him “one of the worst goalkeepers in the club’s history.”
This remark came after Onana asserted that United were “way better” than Lyon. Matic responded by suggesting that such comments would carry more weight if made by legendary United goalkeepers like David de Gea or Peter Schmeichel.
Onana countered by highlighting his FA Cup victory with United and noting that Matic did not secure any trophies during his tenure at the club. Despite the exchange, Onana emphasized his respect for opponents and his focus on team performance.
Since joining United in 2023 for £47 million, Onana has faced criticism for inconsistent performances and errors leading to goals.
However, manager Erik ten Hag has defended him, citing statistics that rank Onana as the second-best goalkeeper in the Premier League based on metrics like save percentage and goals prevented.
