Fatal Blast at Niger Mining Location: Four Dead, Multiple Injured

On the morning of January 26, 2025, a significant explosion occurred at a mining site in Sabon Pegi, Mashegu Local Government Area of Niger State, Nigeria. The incident resulted in multiple fatalities and injuries, though reports on the exact numbers vary.

According to the Niger State Police Command, the explosion was caused by dynamites stored in a residential building by an individual identified as Yushau, intended for mining activities. The blast led to the death of one resident, Fatima Sadauki, and injured six others, who were subsequently taken to General Hospital Kainji for treatment.

However, other sources report higher casualty figures. Premium Times states that four people were confirmed dead, with several others injured. The Guardian Nigeria reports that the death toll has risen to 25.

The explosion caused significant damage, affecting about 12 houses in the area. Search-and-rescue operations are ongoing, with concerns that more victims may still be trapped under the rubble.

The Niger State Police Commissioner has ordered a thorough investigation into the incident to determine the exact cause and prevent future occurrences.
