Nigeria Intensifies Crackdown on Illegal Mining: 327 Arrested Since 2024

Minister Alake Reports: Over 300 Illegal Miners Detained Across Nigeria

Since the inauguration of the Mining Marshals (MM) in March 2024, the Nigerian government has intensified its crackdown on illegal mining activities. According to the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, the MM has arrested 327 individuals involved in illegal mining operations across the country. In collaboration with other agencies, the ministry has prosecuted 143 of these suspects.

The Mining Marshals, primarily composed of officials from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), were established to monitor and curb unauthorized mining activities. Over the past year, they have identified 457 suspected illegal mining sites and successfully reclaimed 98, allowing legitimate license holders to resume operations.

Highlighting the severity of illegal mining, Dr. Alake noted that some companies have been found collaborating with individual miners to engage in illicit practices. He also acknowledged the support of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Nigerian Army in sanitizing the mining sector. Notably, the Federal High Court in Ilorin, Kwara State, recently sentenced two foreigners, Yang Chao and Wu Shan Chuan, to prison for illegal mining, following a case prosecuted by the EFCC.

The MM’s operations have so far focused on ten states: Niger, Kogi, Nasarawa, Akwa Ibom, Ondo, Kaduna, Enugu, Abia, Kwara, and the Federal Capital Territory. Plans are underway to expand coverage to other regions in 2025, with additional personnel recruitment and enhanced logistical support, including vehicles and equipment.
