Nigeria Police Force Celebrates First Police Day in Abuja

Grand Ceremony Marks Nigeria Police Day in Abuja

On April 7, 2025, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) commemorated its inaugural National Police Day with a grand ceremony at Eagle Square in Abuja. The event highlighted the NPF’s dedication to national security and fostering community relations.

The celebration featured an impressive parade showcasing the NPF’s operational and tactical capabilities, including Explosive Ordnance Disposal units, Special Intervention Squads, K9 teams, and Counter-Terrorism units. These demonstrations underscored the force’s commitment to professionalism and public safety.

Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, emphasized that National Police Day symbolizes the NPF’s renewed commitment to professionalism, community partnership, and service excellence. He expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for designating April 7 as National Police Day.

Representing President Tinubu, Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima reiterated the federal government’s commitment to enhancing police welfare and providing modern equipment and technology to boost the NPF’s operational efficiency. He commended the courage and sacrifices of police officers nationwide in combating insecurity.

The ceremony was attended by distinguished guests, including members of the Federal Executive Council, state governors, National Assembly members, service chiefs, retired Inspectors-General of Police, and other dignitaries, reflecting broad support for the NPF’s initiatives.

However, the event was marred by protests from the Take-It-Back Movement and other civil society organizations. Protesters in Maitama, Abuja, demonstrated against alleged repression and misuse of the Cybercrime Act, leading to confrontations with police officers who used tear gas to disperse the crowds.

The NPF remains committed to strengthening its capabilities and fostering positive relationships with the communities it serves, aiming for a safer and more secure Nigeria.
