Nigerian Businessman Detained in South Africa Over Metals

Arrest of Nigerian National in South Africa for Precious Metals

South African law enforcement authorities have arrested a Nigerian national, Benjamin Stanley Okwudili, for alleged possession of precious metals valued at approximately R50 million. The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, known as the Hawks, conducted an intelligence-driven operation on February 27, 2025, at a residence in Linbro Park, Sandton. During the search, officers discovered a gold suitcase containing approximately 90 kilograms of silver stones, suspected to be palladium. Okwudili, unable to provide documentation authorizing his possession of such minerals, was subsequently arrested and charged.

Palladium is a rare, silver-white metal resembling platinum, commonly used in manufacturing processes, particularly for electronics and industrial products. The estimated value of the seized palladium underscores the severity of the offense.

Okwudili, 55, appeared before the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on March 3, 2025, where the case was postponed to March 10 for confirmation of his legal status in South Africa. The Gauteng provincial head of the Hawks, Major General Ebrahim Kadwa, emphasized that this operation serves as a stern warning to all dealers in precious metals, asserting that adherence to the law is non-negotiable, and authorities will take decisive action against any individuals or entities found in violation of the Precious Metals Act.
