The Nigerian government has officially designated Simon Ekpa, leader of the Biafra Republic Government in Exile (BRGIE), along with the Lakurawa terror group and 15 associated business entities, as terrorism financiers.
This decision was confirmed by the Nigeria Sanctions Committee (NSC) following its meeting on March 6, 2025, and was approved by President Bola Tinubu.
Among the 15 entities identified, 13 are linked to the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) or BRGIE. The NSC’s action stems from these individuals’ and entities’ involvement in financing terrorism.
Consequently, financial institutions have been instructed to freeze the assets of the designated parties and report any related transactions to the NSC and the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU).
