Nigerian Man Dies in Maldives Prison on Drug Charges

Tragic Death of Nigerian Drug Trafficker in Maldives

A 35-year-old Nigerian man, Emmanuel John Paul Okonachi, who was awaiting trial on drug trafficking charges, has died in Maafushi Prison, Maldives.

According to the Maldives Correctional Service, Okonachi collapsed suddenly while playing with other inmates in the prison yard on Wednesday afternoon. He was promptly taken to the prison’s medical center for emergency treatment and then transferred to Maafushi Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at approximately 5:20 PM.

Authorities noted that Okonachi was not known to have any chronic illnesses. Relevant agencies, including the Maldives Police Service and the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives, have been informed of his death.
