Concerns Rise After Nigerian’s Death in Police Custody

A Nigerian national, identified as Chinedu Okafor, has reportedly died while in the custody of South African police. Okafor was arrested in Johannesburg on February 5, 2025, under circumstances that remain unclear.

Following his arrest, he was detained at the Johannesburg Central Police Station. Reports indicate that Okafor was found unresponsive in his cell on February 7, 2025, and was subsequently declared dead. The cause of death has not been officially disclosed, and an investigation has been initiated to determine the circumstances leading to his demise.

The Nigerian community in South Africa has expressed concern over the incident, calling for a thorough and transparent investigation. This event has further strained relations between Nigerian expatriates and South African authorities, highlighting ongoing tensions and concerns over the treatment of foreign nationals.
