Nigerian man dupes Indian woman of ₦9m on marriage pretext
Indian police have arrested a Nigerian national accused of defrauding an Indian woman of over ₦9 million under the false promise of marriage.
According to local reports, the suspect posed as a wealthy businessman on social media, where he developed an online relationship with the victim. He allegedly convinced her that he intended to marry her, gradually gaining her trust before demanding large sums of money under various pretenses.
The woman eventually discovered the scam and reported the matter to authorities, leading to the suspect’s arrest. Police say investigations are ongoing to determine whether he is part of a larger fraud syndicate targeting unsuspecting victims online.
Officials have urged the public to exercise caution when engaging in online relationships, stressing that cybercriminals often exploit emotions and trust to carry out financial scams.
The Nigerian embassy in India has been notified of the case, while the suspect remains in custody pending further legal proceedings.
