Badetito Obafemi, a 42-year-old Nigerian national residing in Georgia, has been sentenced to 24 months in federal prison for his role in a romance scam that defrauded victims of over $300,000. U.S. Chief District Judge Beth Phillips also ordered Obafemi to pay $311,520 in restitution and to serve three years of supervised release following his incarceration.
Obafemi pleaded guilty in April 2024 to one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering.
His scheme involved creating fake online personas to establish romantic relationships with vulnerable individuals across various U.S. cities.
Once trust was gained, he manipulated these individuals into sending him money under false pretenses.
