A Nigerian national, identified as “M.A.,” was arrested by the Tamsan Police Department in Barqan Al-Shati, Libya, on January 9, 2025, for allegedly possessing items associated with sorcery.
The arrest was reported by Migrant Rescue Watch, which monitors migrant activities in the region.
The case has been referred to the public prosecution for further legal action.
This incident is part of a series of similar arrests in Libya. In June 2023, a Nigerian woman was detained in Sokna, southwestern Libya, for allegedly possessing sorcery and witchcraft paraphernalia.
Additionally, in December 2024, a Sudanese national was arrested in Brak for similar charges.
Libyan authorities have been actively enforcing laws against practices they consider sorcery or witchcraft, leading to multiple arrests, particularly among migrant communities.
