Nigerian Navy Foils Attempt: 19 Stowaways Caught on Europe-Bound Vessels in Lagos

Lagos Port Security: Nigerian Navy Intercepts 19 Stowaways on Europe-Headed Ships

The Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECROFT has intercepted 19 suspected stowaways attempting to illegally migrate to Europe from Lagos. On December 19, 2024, 15 individuals were discovered aboard the Europe-bound vessel MT KRITI RUBY, and on December 21, an additional four were found on MT MCC YANBU.

These stowaways had concealed themselves in the rudder compartments of the vessels, boarding under the cover of night. The Navy’s Quick Response Team (QRT), utilizing the Falcon Eye Alignment—a Nigerian Navy Maritime Domain Awareness Facility—successfully intercepted the individuals at the Lagos fairway buoy.

The prompt action of the QRT not only prevented potential security threats posed by stowaways, such as smuggling, piracy, and human trafficking, but also safeguarded the individuals from life-threatening situations during prolonged voyages.

The first group of 15 suspects has been handed over to the Nigeria Immigration Service, Lagos State Port/Marine Command, Apapa, for further investigation, with the remaining four to follow.

This operation underscores the Nigerian Navy’s commitment to maintaining security within the nation’s maritime environment, ensuring safe passage for legitimate maritime activities.
