Former Nigerian Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, recently revealed that the introduction of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in 1973 faced significant resistance from Nigerian students.
Speaking during a courtesy visit by the newly appointed NYSC Director General, Brigadier General Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu, at his Asokoro residence in Abuja, Gowon acknowledged the initial opposition but commended the NYSC for evolving into a vital instrument for national unity, integration, and youth empowerment over the past five decades.
The NYSC was established in the aftermath of the Nigerian Civil War as a strategic initiative to promote reconciliation and rebuild the nation. By deploying graduates to regions outside their states of origin, the scheme aimed to foster understanding and cooperation among Nigeria’s diverse ethnic groups. Despite the early skepticism, the NYSC has played a crucial role in harnessing the potential of Nigerian youths and promoting national cohesion.
