Nigeria’s Corruption Crisis Reaches Fatal Stage: Insights from Obasanjo

Obasanjo Speaks Out: Understanding Nigeria’s Escalating Corruption Issues

Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has expressed deep concern about the state of corruption in Nigeria, describing it as being at a “fatal stage.”

During a recent lecture on governance and ethics, Obasanjo criticized the pervasive corruption among political officeholders, emphasizing that many leaders at both executive and legislative levels should face legal consequences for their actions.

He argued that such entrenched corruption undermines justice and progress in the country.

Obasanjo also highlighted that the normalization of corruption within Nigeria’s political and electoral systems has been a significant barrier to development.

He called for transformational leadership characterized by integrity, morality, and a commitment to national welfare, contrasting it with the transactional leadership he believes is prevalent today.

His remarks were made during the Denis Slattery Memorial Lecture in Lagos, where he addressed governance issues in Nigeria and Africa more broadly.
