The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially announced that the long-overdue national census will be conducted in 2025.
This was confirmed by Nasir Kwarra, the chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), during an event in Abuja marking the anniversary of the Nairobi Summit on the International Conference on Population and Development.
The census, last held in 2006, has faced multiple delays, with the most recent scheduled attempt in 2023 being postponed.
Kwarra highlighted that the absence of updated demographic data hampers effective resource allocation and planning, especially for underserved populations in rural areas.
Accurate population data is critical for advancing social development, including healthcare and gender equality initiatives.
