Nigeria’s Power Grid: Aging Equipment and Frequent Collapses

Outdated Infrastructure Behind Nigeria’s Grid Failures

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has clarified that it should not be solely blamed for the recurring grid collapses in the country.

In a recent statement, the TCN revealed that some of the equipment currently in use to manage the national grid are outdated, ranging between 40 and 50 years old.

This aging infrastructure is a significant factor contributing to the frequent grid collapses that have affected electricity supply across Nigeria.

The TCN acknowledged the public frustration over the unstable power supply but pointed out that the existing equipment poses challenges to maintaining a stable grid.

While the company has been making efforts to modernize and upgrade certain parts of the grid, the process is slow due to financial and logistical constraints.

They also emphasized the need for more government investment and support to replace the outdated equipment and improve overall power transmission.

The statement highlights the complex nature of Nigeria’s power sector, where various stakeholders—generation, transmission, and distribution companies—face challenges in ensuring reliable power supply.

The TCN’s remarks are an appeal for understanding, calling attention to the urgent need for infrastructure upgrades.
