The Nigerian Presidency has clarified that Nigeria was not “snubbed” in the 2024 United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) election, countering speculations and reports suggesting otherwise.
This statement was issued following Nigeria’s unsuccessful bid to secure a seat on the council, which led to claims that the country had been intentionally sidelined.
According to the Presidency, Nigeria’s non-election to the council should not be interpreted as a rejection or snub.
It emphasized that elections for seats on international bodies, such as the UNHRC, are competitive, and not winning a seat does not reflect negatively on the country’s human rights record or international standing.
The Presidency also reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to human rights and its active role in international diplomacy and organizations.
The government’s response aimed to address any misconceptions and assure the public that Nigeria remains an important player on the global stage, continuing its efforts to advocate for human rights and participate in international bodies, despite the outcome of this particular election.
