Nihon Hidankyo: 2024 Nobel Peace Prize Winners

Hibakusha: Advocating Nuclear Disarmament for Peace

The 2024 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Nihon Hidankyo, a Japanese organization formed by survivors of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

The group, also known as Hibakusha, was recognized for its decades-long advocacy for nuclear disarmament and its powerful witness testimonies about the horrors of nuclear warfare.

Through their efforts, they have significantly contributed to the global movement against nuclear weapons, promoting the “nuclear taboo” that has helped prevent their use in conflict for nearly 80 years.

This award comes as a poignant reminder of the devastating impact of nuclear weapons, with the Nobel Committee emphasizing the need for continued vigilance in the face of modern nuclear threats.

Nihon Hidankyo’s work, which includes annual delegations to the United Nations and numerous global peace conferences, has been instrumental in raising awareness of the catastrophic consequences of nuclear war.
