Obasanjo: A Call to End Poverty in Nigeria

Nigerians Have No Business with Poverty – Obasanjo’s Insight

Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo recently emphasized that Nigerians have no business being poor, attributing the nation’s poverty to mismanagement of its abundant resources. He stated, “Nigerians have no business with poverty because God has given us all that we need. If we are mismanaging what God has given us, we do not have God to blame, we have ourselves to blame” .

Obasanjo made these remarks while commending Abia State Governor Alex Otti for his administration’s transformation efforts, highlighting the widespread public approval of his governance .

This perspective aligns with Obasanjo’s long-standing view that Nigeria’s challenges stem from leadership failures and poor resource management. In a 2022 speech, he remarked that Nigeria has no business with poverty, insecurity, or political division, emphasizing the need for a national dream and identity .

Obasanjo’s comments come amid ongoing economic reforms under President Bola Tinubu, including the removal of petrol subsidies and currency devaluation. While these measures aim to stabilize the economy, they have led to increased inflation and hardship for many Nigerians .
