Stephanie Demetrius, a 44-year-old substitute teacher at the Academy for Urban Scholars High School in Columbus, Ohio, has been arrested and charged with felony conspiracy to commit murder. She allegedly offered a student $2,000 to kill her estranged husband, providing a $250 down payment. Demetrius reportedly informed the student about her husband’s work-from-home schedule and the times their children would be absent.
The plot was uncovered when the student’s mother discovered incriminating evidence on her child’s phone and alerted authorities. A recorded phone call between Demetrius and the student further corroborated the allegations. During her arraignment, Demetrius denied the charges through her public defender. She is currently held on a $150,000 bond, with a preliminary hearing scheduled for April 11.
Court records indicate that Demetrius filed for divorce in April 2024, and her husband had previously obtained a protective order against her, citing incidents of violence and threats.
The Academy for Urban Scholars High School has terminated Demetrius’s employment and is cooperating with authorities. They are offering counseling services to the affected student and other students or families who may need support.
