Paul Pogba, the French midfielder, has openly discussed experiencing depression during his tenure at Manchester United, particularly under manager José Mourinho. Pogba revealed that his struggles began during Mourinho’s leadership, stating, “Personally, it started when I was with José Mourinho in Manchester. You ask yourself questions. You wonder if it’s your fault, because you have never experienced moments like that before in your life.”
The relationship between Pogba and Mourinho became notably strained in September 2018 when Mourinho stripped Pogba of the vice-captaincy, reportedly due to concerns about his attitude. This period marked a low point for Pogba, who admitted to feelings of isolation and self-doubt.
To cope with these challenges, Pogba emphasized the importance of support from family and friends, highlighting conversations with former teammate Patrice Evra as particularly helpful. He noted, “I refocus on my family, my friends… I talk a lot with ‘Tonton Pat’ (Patrice Evra), former players who have gone through this, because they will understand you immediately.”
Pogba also addressed the misconception that professional athletes are immune to mental health issues due to their financial success, stating, “Of course, we earn a lot of money and we can’t complain, really, but it doesn’t stop you from going through these moments.” His openness sheds light on the mental health challenges athletes may face, regardless of their public personas or earnings.
