Peter Obi Clarifies: No 2027 Merger with PDP or NNPP Confirmed

2027 Elections: Peter Obi Denies PDP and NNPP Merger Rumors

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, has clarified that there is currently no merger agreement with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), or any other political party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

During a press conference in Abuja on January 2, 2025, Obi stated that while discussions may be ongoing, no formal agreements have been established. He emphasized the importance of uniting all patriotic Nigerians in the political sphere to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the upcoming elections.

Obi also expressed concerns about the nation’s current state, highlighting issues such as insecurity, corruption, and economic mismanagement. He criticized the high level of corruption and the escalating public debt under the current administration, attributing these problems to the APC’s mismanagement of the country’s resources.

In the 2023 presidential election, Obi secured over six million votes, finishing third behind the APC’s Bola Tinubu and the PDP’s Atiku Abubakar. His performance was notable for a first-time contestant, reflecting significant support across various regions.

As the 2027 elections approach, Obi’s statements suggest a focus on building a broad coalition of Nigerians dedicated to addressing the nation’s challenges and promoting good governance, rather than relying solely on formal party mergers.
