The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the arraignment of Abiola Odutayo in connection with the death of Adetunji “Teejay” Opayele, co-founder of the tech startup Bumpa. Opayele, a 32-year-old software engineer, died on March 4, 2025, following a collision on Ozumba Mbadiwe Road, Victoria Island, Lagos. Reports indicate that while riding his power bike, he was struck by a vehicle driven by Odutayo, who allegedly entered the expressway without yielding.
According to Lagos police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin, Odutayo was arraigned on March 12, 2025, at Court 1, Tinubu, after being discharged from the hospital. She faces charges of reckless and careless driving on a public highway, resulting in Opayele’s death. The court granted her bail, and the case has been adjourned to April 16, 2025.
The incident has sparked public outcry, with many Nigerians demanding justice for Opayele. A Change.org petition alleging that Odutayo refused to assist the injured Opayele after the crash has garnered significant attention. The Lagos State Police Command has assured the public of a thorough investigation and remains committed to transparency, fairness, and justice in handling the case.
