Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Irutugu, has confirmed that the principal suspect in the kidnapping and murder of Hon. Justice Azuka remains in custody. This clarification comes after reports that two individuals, Chinedu and Ikemefuna, escaped from police custody.
CP Irutugu emphasized that these escapees were not the main perpetrators but were assisting in the recovery of the victim’s stolen property. The primary suspect, Tochukwu Akolisa, is still detained and cooperating with ongoing investigations. The Commissioner acknowledged procedural lapses leading to the escape and assured that measures are being taken to address any negligence by the officers involved.
The Labour Party caucus in the Anambra State House of Assembly has expressed concerns over the escape, suggesting possible police complicity and calling for a thorough investigation to ensure justice for the late lawmaker.
Efforts are underway to recapture the escaped individuals, and the police command has initiated disciplinary actions against any officers found culpable in the incident.
