On March 11, 2025, in Naka, Gwer West Local Government Area (LGA) of Benue State, Nigeria, protesters set fire to the Gwer West LGA Secretariat and the palace of the traditional ruler, Ter Nagi, Chief Daniel Abomtse. This unrest was sparked by the killing of three operatives of the Benue Civil Protection Guards by suspected armed herders in the Garuwa community.
The bodies of the slain guards were brought to Naka early Tuesday, triggering protests that escalated into arson. Gwer West LGA Chairman, Victor Omirin, confirmed the incident, stating that the protests, initially peaceful, were hijacked by hoodlums leading to the destruction of properties.
Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, condemned the killings, describing them as a flagrant affront to the peace and security of Benue communities. He appealed for calm and urged youths to avoid taking laws into their hands, emphasizing that security agencies are working to apprehend the perpetrators.
