On January 28, 2025, violent protests erupted in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), targeting multiple foreign embassies.
Demonstrators attacked the embassies of France, Belgium, the Netherlands, the United States, Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya, and the United Nations, setting several embassy gates on fire and causing property damage. The protesters accused these nations of supporting the M23 rebels, who had recently seized control of Goma, a major city in eastern DRC.
Videos from the scene showed protesters breaking into the French Embassy and looting the building, resulting in a fire that was later brought under control.
The U.S. Embassy also faced attacks, with fires lit near its premises.
The Congolese government urged protesters to cease the violence and maintain peaceful demonstrations, emphasizing their right to express anger but calling for restraint.
