Russian President Vladimir Putin has proposed establishing a temporary administration in Ukraine under international supervision to facilitate democratic elections and peace negotiations. He suggests that this interim government be sponsored by the United Nations, the United States, European countries, and Russia.
Putin argues that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s mandate has expired due to constitutional prohibitions on elections under martial law, questioning the current government’s legitimacy.
This proposal has been met with significant international criticism. U.S. and European officials have rejected the idea, emphasizing Zelenskyy’s legitimate election and condemning external interference in Ukraine’s sovereignty. UN Secretary-General António Guterres also dismissed the suggestion, affirming the legitimacy of Ukraine’s government.
The Ukrainian government has responded defiantly. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Heorhii Tykhyi countered by proposing temporary UN governance in Russia, highlighting the perceived irony and rejecting Putin’s proposition.
