Reno Omokri, a former presidential aide and political commentator, has publicly declared his intention to dismantle the “Obidient Movement,” the collective of supporters backing Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 Nigerian elections. In a recent interview, Omokri stated, “I took a vow to destroy that movement because Peter Obi was a project of mine.”
Omokri claims he played a pivotal role in Obi’s political ascent, asserting that he was instrumental in Obi’s selection as the vice-presidential candidate alongside Atiku Abubakar in the 2019 elections. He emphasized, “I was responsible for Peter Obi becoming the running mate to Waziri Atiku Abubakar in 2019.”
The rift between Omokri and the Obidient Movement appears to stem from personal grievances. Omokri alleges that members of the movement targeted him and his family with threats and harassment. He recounted, “I received too many death threats… they threatened my daughter, they threatened my wife.”
Despite his past support for Obi, Omokri’s recent statements underscore a significant shift in his stance, highlighting the complex and often contentious dynamics within Nigerian political affiliations.
