Edison Ehie, Chief of Staff to suspended Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, has denied involvement in the October 29, 2023, explosion at the Rivers State House of Assembly chambers.
In a recent interview, Ehie emphasized that only the Speaker, Martin Amaewhule, had access to the Assembly premises after hours and on weekends, suggesting that Amaewhule should be questioned regarding the incident.
Ehie also mentioned that ten witnesses, including senior police officers, testified before a Federal High Court in Abuja, confirming they saw the Speaker’s convoy accessing the Assembly complex on the night of the explosion.
These statements come in response to allegations from former Rivers State Head of Civil Service, George Nweke, who claimed that Governor Fubara and Ehie were responsible for the explosion. Ehie has instructed his lawyers to file a criminal libel suit against Nweke, challenging him to substantiate his claims.
The explosion has intensified the political crisis within the Rivers State government, highlighting the ongoing power struggle between factions led by Governor Fubara and Speaker Amaewhule. This rift has led to chaotic scenes and further complications in the state’s legislative activities.
