The Federal Government has assured that the state of emergency declared in Rivers State will be lifted promptly once normalcy is restored. Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, emphasized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to reinstating democratic structures as soon as stability returns. Idris stated, “As soon as he assesses that sanity has returned to Rivers State, he will ensure the restoration of all democratic structures in that state.”
The emergency rule, approved by the National Assembly, was instituted to address escalating political tensions and security challenges within the state. The government has reiterated that this measure is temporary and solely aimed at restoring order.
Opposition figures, including former Governor of Bayelsa State, Henry Dickson, have criticized the declaration, labeling it unconstitutional. Additionally, governors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are reportedly preparing to challenge the emergency rule in the Supreme Court.
The Federal Government maintains that the emergency rule will not persist longer than necessary, with the primary objective being the swift restoration of peace and democratic governance in Rivers State.
