The Rivers State Police Command has arrested a 35-year-old woman, Blessing Daberechi Oleru, for her involvement in an ATM debit card swapping syndicate.
The arrest followed a report made on November 26, 2024, by a victim who experienced unauthorized withdrawals totaling ₦523,600 after his ATM card was fraudulently swapped at a bank in the Garrison area of Port Harcourt. Oleru was apprehended on February 5, 2025, and during interrogation, she confessed to the crime.
A Moniepoint Point of Sale (POS) machine was recovered from her possession. The police are continuing their investigation to apprehend other members of the syndicate.
This arrest underscores the ongoing issue of ATM card fraud in Nigeria. Similar incidents have been reported in other states, including Kaduna, where police dismantled a syndicate and recovered 54 ATM cards from various banks.
