Bishop Urges Calm Amid Rivers State Turmoil
The political landscape in Rivers State has been marked by significant tensions, prompting calls for peace from various quarters. Most recently, Bishop Sunday Onuoha has urged all parties involved to “give peace a chance,” expressing concern over the prolonged nature of the crisis and advocating for dialogue as a means to resolve the issues.
The crisis, which escalated in October 2024, centers around a power struggle between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike. This internal conflict has led to a division within the 31-member state assembly, resulting in two opposing factions.
Governor Fubara has attributed the turmoil to disputes over resource control, emphasizing his administration’s commitment to safeguarding state assets.
He also acknowledged that the crisis has inadvertently granted him greater autonomy in governance, suggesting that divine intervention played a role in the unfolding events.
The Supreme Court’s recent decision to nullify the elections of 23 local government chairmen has further complicated the situation, raising concerns about governance and public welfare in the state.
In light of these developments, Bishop Onuoha’s appeal for peace underscores the necessity of dialogue and reconciliation to prevent further escalation and ensure the stability of Rivers State.
